Goblins and Skeletons and Iron Guardians, Oh My!

For those of you who want a little more random in your 4e, check out Ian Toltz's random encounter generator. You tell it the parameters, and it searches the Monster Manual, and some recent issues of Dungeon and Dragon, and spits out some monsters for you.

Here are the results of a request for a 5th level encounter:

Attempting to find an encounter with monsters of level 3 to 7 worth approximately 1000 experience...

QtyNameTypeExpSource
2Troglodyte MaulerLevel 6 Soldier 250Monster Manual
1Greenscale Marsh Mystic (Lizardfolk)Level 6 Controller (Leader)250Monster Manual
2SkeletonLevel 3 Soldier 150Monster Manual

Total experience: 1050

Experience per character: 210

Encounter level: 5

The randomness can get pretty wild, since even with all the parameters it's looking for, it still doesn't return results that make obvious sense. Of course, those of us who love randomly generating content for our games know that taking seemingly nonsensical results and massaging them until they do make sense can create magic.
