Of course, it would be awesomer if they were actually working pistols as well instead of a glorious, 18th century version of a joke pistol that spits out a flag saying "bang". But the sheer inspiration alone goes a long way to silence my quibbling with precision birdsong.
Very cool inspiration for some kind of magic item, or perhaps the signature weapon of a Munchausen-esque gentleman adventurer.

And it's nice to be reminded that just because they didn't have microchips doesn't mean our ancestors couldn't do some extremely amazing things.
